Failure

Well I know how often everyone checks my blog since I update it so often. But I also have another blog that I use if you are interested. Pretty much Gretchen will be the only one who reads this so, Gretchen if you would like to read about what I have been up to here's the link to my BodyBlog: http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/littleShaw/

On the left will be the task bar and you can use that to get to the blog or progress pics.

Have at it.

Da College Life

Well I'm sick so I decided to finally set aside some time from all the partying and weightlifting... and studying, to put something on my blog. Since I am not in the greatest mind right now from drowsiness I think that a list will do just fine. And the list will be about my great experiences at college so far.

And in no particular order...

-I have started teaching myself piano for the last two days. On the first day when I told people that I had just started teaching myself they were really surprised and even one girl thought I was a music major composing music. I wasn't sure how good you normally could play on your first day, but I was playing some of my favorite songs and you could recognize them. So I think I am a pretty good instructor. I am looking for an electric keyboard on craigslist.com and planning on taking the class "Beginning to Keyboarding" winter quarter.

-My floor is utterly amazing. We are the BroHo, short for Brotherhood. We have the most school spirit. We do everything together as a floor. Eat lunch and dinner together. Go out on the town. Paint our chests for soccer games. (I'm the first "R" in "Darren" for those who read my blog, but don't know me personally.) Play all the intramural sports together. All doors are open all the time. We are also known for our scooters. We have like six scooters on our floor and that is your main transportation around the residence hall. You grab a scooter even if you are just going next door ten feet away. We have the best skits. And we are also known as "the hot floor."

-I bought a niiiiice 5.1 surround sound system. I blast my music like no other and the bass just shakes the room. The girls the floor below me say they don't like my taste in music though.

-I get to hit up the weight room every other day easily. Two great locations. My workouts have been intense and nice. That is pretty much what I look forward to during class.

-Haven't partied at all

-I watch what I eat nutritionally

-I make a lot of friends everyday

-I had Bubble Tea, which isn't tea, and the bubbles aren't air.

-70% girls

-I had a lot of fun making my spartan outfit for "The History of the BroHo" skit. (That's me with the ridiculously good looking gold helmet.)

-I have decided to take up a lot of new hobbies including, but not limited to: blacksmithing, woodworks, outfit making, scootering, writing thoughts in my pocketbook during class when boring, listening to music, not uploading any pictures to Facebook of my college experience because I don't have a camera *hint* *hint*, being self-sufficient (I did my own laundry!), being other-sufficient (a girl made my bed for me), playing pool and BroHo ball.

-Venturing around and doing college stuff that has no importance

So pretty much my mind held on long enough to scribble down all that, but now I am afraid that I am on a crash course for bed. I hope this entry made everyone jealous of my time at college.

Taxing Train Trip to Toklat

Well today (9/3/08) is the day I finally head back to Colorado. I had one of the best times of my life in Wisconsin, but now it is time to return home. If you like, join me on my retelling of my 1,000 mile train trip. To start off the day, my brother-in-law Matt, dropped me off at the train station at 9:30 for my 11:30 train. I pretty much just sat and read the Catcher in the Rye, until a thuggish looking guy around early 20's came up to me as i was texting on my phone. He asked me if he could use my phone. I let him use it several times and he kept talking to several people trying to get them to pick him up. Finally I asked him what the problem was, and he said he was kicked out of a car and needed to get to Appleton, but he needed another $4 for his bus ticket. So I got change and gave it to him. He used my phone several more times and probably for a total of 10 times. It was fun talking to him. He finally left and got on the bus, leaving me by myself again to read more of the Catcher in the Rye.
The ride to Chicago was pretty quick, but when I got to the station my mom wanted me to go straight to my gate even though it was two hours till departure. Instead I went and explored. Bought a Men's Health Magazine, USA Today, Jalapeno Chips, and a Muscle & Fitness Magazine at the stores. On the cover of Muscle & Fitness was Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Viking's running back. Last night I watched the Packers win a great game against the Vikings. I really liked Aaron Rodgers, or as I like to call him A-Rodg. I think he did a great job for taking up the mighty #4's position as leader of the green and gold, and not letting that kind of pressure get to him.
I began to think about how I would be seated on a train for 24 hours dawned on me and I could almost feel the fat pack on my stomach. I would sit still and the only muscle I would use would be my adductor pollicis (thumb muscle) to turn the pages in my book and magazines. So after going through this in my mind I decided to do whatever exercise I could before boarding the train. So I ran up and down the stairs a few times just to get myself moving. I knew I would barely move my joints for the next day and this would really help me not get tight and uncomfortable. Felt a lil weird, but it was fun doing whatever I wanted. After the run I realized it was close to boarding time so I got to my gate just as everyone began to stand up to board. But unfortunately we remained standing for 30 minutes because of delays.
On the train I picked what I thought was a good seat, but a family with a little boy sat in front of me. I didn't see them sit down, but as soon as I heard the little boy make a squeak and a cry, I grabbed my stuff and moved to the back of the train car. After reading the newspaper I decided to explore the train. I went downstairs, but right next to the restrooms was the room where they kept some carry-on luggage. It had the perfect distance between the shelves for dips and it also had a bar for pull-ups. So I got my workout in several times on the trip down in that room, till I came down the next day when the door was closed and the sign said authorized "personnel only." I just kept going and went into the restrooms instead.
It was getting pretty late and after talking with Alison on the phone for a while I headed upstairs to go to sleep. I read more of "The Catcher in the Rye", but when it wasn't putting me to sleep I tried to just close my eyes and drift into my dreams. I lay with my eyes closed, but the aisle lights, which were much stronger than they needed to be, kept me up. As I tried getting comfortable in my little chair I probably rotated between seven different positions throughout the night. When I woke up around 2:30 am it was freezing. Not like "Dang, it's a tid bit nippy.", But like "Dang, did I just snuggle with a wet yeti?" cold. I was very tempted to steal the blanket off the elderly couple across the aisle from me. I'm glad I didn't steal from them because the next morning I had a good conversation with them in the dining car. Funny old bunch. The grandma wrote my name down and took a picture of me. She was really sweet though.
The next morning I also had a long talk with a missionary guy. We talked about theology a whole bunch and some books. He told me everything about trains since he used to work for Amtrak. We talked for over two hours and had a great time. He wrote my name down on a note card with about one hundred other names already on there. It was his prayer card. A bunch of people he prayed for. He was a really neat guy and had a great time talking with him.
And the bummer of the trip was when the train had to go a snail's pace because of communication problems causing the train trip to be a 30 hour train ride. Ugh. But when I got off the train it was nice to see my brother and mother waiting there with my name on a paper looking for me. "Hi" I said. Then we went home.

Random thoughts on the train :
-I saw a green Volkswagen Beetle, but I looked around and there didn't seem to be anyone playful enough on the train to take the punch.
- My teeth hurt, not like cavity hurt, but like I got punched in the teeth hurt. I don't know why.
-My granola bar tasted like McFarland.

Goal # 50 Buzz My Hair Completed

Well after many months of hating my curly hair and fussing with it every morning, trying to rid it of the swirls and loops I finally just cut it off as much as I dared. And I am so glad I did it. I think everyone should try buzzing their hair. Do you know how good it feels when a strong wind blows through your barely there hair? Amazing let me tell you. I was very surprised. I took a nice long walk by myself and thought about my hair. Just running my hand over it feels great too. And here's a cellular pic of it for you.

Waves of Wisconsin

As I walked down the sidewalk towards the beach a rank smell made its way up my nostrils. The memories of the dirty Lake Michigan from my childhood flooded in. Dead fish bones piled along the tide line, seaweed of some sort wrapped around my toes, vomit colored water flowing up my nose. I feared the worst as I looked out over the endless vast of H2O, which I dreaded because of my lack of swimming lessons. But at least there was sand, and with sand there are sandcastles. I just had to put up with the stench long enough for my smell buds to commit suicide. Alison, Ashley, and Zak made their way across the miniscule dunes. Trudging their bikes through the sand, proving to be more difficult than it seemed. I was glad when we got to our spot and laid down our beach towels that the smell actually barely repulsed me. And as I lay still, the sun beat down hard on my skin. The rays from the sun were not as I remembered them being in Colorado. Here in Wisconsin it seemed more like the sun was pulling at my skin. I could almost feel it lifting me off the sand. I lay there thinking for a few moments, about where I was, and my company. It was nice to be there with two of my best friends. I actually let my mind wander enough to think that I might actually like the beach. I decided it was time to test the water. Zak and I dipped our toes in and the chill that ran up my leg was not welcome, but I was going to enjoy this water anyway. So I dove in and it really wasn’t that bad. I enjoyed the rush of the waves push me back under the water. I didn’t enjoy the water up my nose though. The waves further out invited me into their wake. I jumped over the smaller currents that tried to slow me down on my way to the big kahuna. As the big one fell I turned around and made a miserable attempt at riding it. But as I continued to dive through, jump over, splash and ride the waves I realized I actually enjoyed this brisk, cool liquid that still smelt vaguely of soot and poo. I imagined myself swimming through the dark blue in California, building a great sandcastle and babes wooing all over it, well maybe not the babes, but definitely a magnificent sandcastle. And after the best day at the beach I came away with a hankering to take a trip to California and try my hand at surfing.

First Night at UWM

Well yesterday (8/27/08) was the move-in day for many of my friends attending UWMilwaukee. It was great to see more of my friends and their new living quarters for the next year. It looks like it is a great place, but I’m very pleased to know that the rooms at Seattle Pacific University are larger. Alison and Rachel both have singles which means no roommate. I think it was a wise choice, but I am still looking forward to having a roommate. Nathan was supposed to have a roommate, but it seems that his roommate decided not to go to Marquette leaving Nathan with a bigger room all to himself.
Although we had trouble finding things to do during the day at UWM, it seemed like our first night would prove to be an interesting one. As we sat in North Tower’s 16th floor we saw a lot of loud (drunk) people go into one of the rooms. After about the third wave of people who went into the room we decided we should see if they will let us in. We knock on the door and when the door opens you could smell the alcohol waft out into the hallway. We ask if there’s a party inside, but the girl just looks around at us. Finally content with her investigation she grabs us by the collars and pulls us in. Inside looked like a mix mash of drunkenness and confusion. We didn’t know what was going on in one of the beds, but it seemed like a guy was trying to piledrive a group of girls. Wasn’t as bad of a party as we presumed, looked kinda lame actually. Once we were all in the hallway, the girl that dragged us in began to introduce herself to everyone. She was a lil creepy with a hint of crazy. Slurring her words she went up to each of us in the cramped hallway. Standing much closer than necessary she would say “Hi, I’m Alicia.” But it sounded much more like, “Eye, I’mm a leachhh-uhh.” With her arm crooked up almost against herself and her hand pointed at the ground for a miserable handshake, we quickly decided this was not exactly the place we were looking for. After Alicia made her rounds she stumbled into the dorm room we had a pleasant talk with another girl, Brenna. But not too long into the conversation Alicia came out… and introduced herself… a second time. So we all took the crooked handshake and made our way out of the suite. A few people from the party followed us out into the common and with our new group of people we decided to see who else wanted to join in. We ran from floor to floor seeing who else was just wandering the tower with no party to go to. On one floor we saw a suite door and dorm room door open so we all wandered in and saw no one. We stood there for about twenty seconds complaining about how stupid it was to leave your dorm room open when a big black dude in just his shorts comes out of the closet or something and just stood there dumbfounded, wondering why there were ten people in his room. We all bolted to another floor laughing our heads off. We lost all the friends that were with us, but later found them on the smoke deck. We sat there, once again wondering how to rid us of this boredom. Chris asked, “What is there to do?” And Kevin, the one drunken friend we picked up from the party, just blurts out, “Fucking shit.” Although he did not realize how funny it was, it quickly became the quote of the week. After the laughs died down, we decided to play Apples to Apples so we headed up stairs, made popcorn (which burnt and set off the smoke alarm), I won Apples to Apples (Oh yea!), and Alicia found us (Oh no).
